Sodomy charges against 3Kurukshetra cops false: SIT
Karnal, July 7 -- Days after a man claimed to be a cancer patient and accused cops of thrashing and sodomising him inside a police station in Ladwa, Kurukshetra, a special investigation team (SIT) constituted to probe the matter found the allegations false, superintendent of police Chander Mohan said on Monday.
The SP said that the victim was not a cancer patient and was suffering from a chronic anal fissure, which caused the bleeding.
The incident happened on the night of June 17, when the victim was stopped at a police checkpoint and asked by a home guard on duty to remove cloth from his face. The victim, a private bank employee, alleged in his complaint that the two reportedly got into an altercation during which a Dial 112 team arrived after which he was beaten up and sodomised by police personnel inside the police station.
The SP said that taking action on the complaint of the accused, a case was registered and an SIT was formed under DSP Nirmal Singh. ASIs Sanjeev Kumar and Rajendra Kumar and home guard Sumit Kumar, were suspended.
At a press conference at his office, the SP said that the SIT completed the entire investigation within 15 days and submitted its report to him.
"At the time of the incident, the man, under the influence of alcohol, argued with police officers and was detained under Section 172 of the BNSS Act. He remained within the coverage of CCTV cameras installed inside the police station and the lockup. He was only released from the lockup for 10 minutes, during which he was assaulted by the cops as he provoked them under the influence of alcohol. Action will be taken against the officers for assault," he said.
The SP said that the allegations levelled by the man against the cops have not been proven.
He said that it was established the man was not a bone cancer patient, which the PGIMER, Chandigarh, verified, and that he had not undergone any chemotherapy previously.
"The SIT got the DNA test done of swabs, clothes etc., but sodomy was not confirmed. Apart from this, a lie detector test was also conducted on the accused cops in which no evidence of sodomy came up. The complainant was also asked to undergo a lie detector test, but he refused. Before this, the youth had also refused to undergo a medical examination by a board, but later accepted our request," he said.
Regarding the bleeding, Mohan said there was no such issue reported with him inside the lock-up, police station or any other place he was taken by the cops.
It was clarified by the doctors that the man was suffering from chronic anal fissure, which caused the bleeding, the SP said, adding that the investigation revealed someone instigated the man and action will be taken against them too if involved.
The SP came down heavily on journalists and YouTubers for "reporting on the incident insensitively, pointing out infactual reports by a section of the media". "Your reporting remains on social media for a long time, so there should be some sensitivity and verification," he added....
