Mohali, Aug. 14 -- Police have booked a Zirakpur firm on Wednesday for duping six job seekers of Rs.19 lakh after they paid between Rs.70,000 and Rs.5 lakh each to the ship management company for providing Merchant Navy jobs. The candidates were left without employment after the firm issued them an invalid offer, guarantee and boarding documents. The six complainants had paid between Rs.70,000 and Rs.4.95 lakh each through bank transfers, online payment applications and cash. The total amount paid by the six candidates was Rs.19 lakh. The company representatives promised Merchant Navy jobs to the candidates and issued offer letters, guarantee documents and boarding letters after receiving the payments. When the candidates sought flight tickets and details of the vessels, where they were to join, the company representatives stopped responding to them. The candidates later found that the documents provided to them contained invalid details and later visited the company's office at Chandigarh City Centre on VIP Road, Zirakpur, but found it locked. The candidates demanded a refund from the company. According to the complaints, the accused issued cheques to the candidates, but the banks returned the cheques unpaid after the accounts were blocked. The complainants also approached the accused for their money but received threats during the process. Police conducted a preliminary inquiry and summoned the named directors and employees for questioning. The accused did not appear before the investigating officials. A case has been registered under Sections 316(2), 318(4), 336(2) 336(3), 340(2), and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), dealing with criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, use of forged documents and criminal conspiracy....
