SIT to probe minister'sclaims against husband
Dehradun, Oct. 18 -- Uttarakhand police has constituted a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations of forgery, caste-based harassment and conspiring to murder her levelled by women and child development minister Rekha Arya against her husband Girdhari Lal Sahu, officers said.
Sahu on Friday had asked Arya to withdraw the FIR and alleged she was corrupt. She said that there was no question of taking back the FIR against him.
Dehradun superitendent of police (rural) Jaya Baloni, SIT in charge, said, "We will record the minister's statement once she is discharged. We have also reached out to the accused on his mobile number, but it is switched off."
Speaking to the media from her hospital bed on Friday, Arya said, "After the audio recording came to light, there was every reason for action to be taken." He (Sahu) is asking me to withdraw my complaint. This amounts to a veiled threat, in a way, suggesting that whether corruption exists or not is for him to decide," she said.
Arya said her actions were intended to encourage women facing domestic violence to stop worrying about societal perceptions and report any wrongdoing against them. "When we refuse to tolerate such abuse and speak out against it, such atrocities will stop," she said.
Dismissing the corruption allegations against her as baseless, Arya said she was ready to face any inquiry. "If I am found guilty, I am ready to face action," she said. On Thursday, Arya accused her husband Sahu of forgery, caste-based harassment and conspiring to murder her, prompting the police to register an FIR against him.
In her complaint to the police, Arya on Thursday alleged that Sahu had concealed his earlier marriage before entering into a union with her and had relationships with other women. She also alleged that Sahu, in collusion with another woman, was plotting to kill her.
Arya, the BJP legislator from Someshwar assembly in Almora, also alleged that Sahu forged her signature on various documents to remove her from certain positions, despite her not having submitted any resignation. The alleged offences took place over an extended period, from July 6, 2004, to October 15, 2026, according to her complaint.
Arya posted a video statement on Facebook and also shared two audio of purported phone calls of her husband with some woman. HT could not independently verify the veracity of the audio recordings.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UKPCC) president Ganesh Godiyal on Saturday expressed sympathy for cabinet minister Rekha Arya but said allegations that she had amassed assets worth Rs.210 crore, levelled by her husband, needed to be investigated.
"If Arya has faced harassment, she has the Congress's full sympathy as a daughter of Uttarakhand. No woman should face injustice. However, serious allegations concerning assets worth Rs.210 crore and the supply of mid-day meal ration meant for schoolchildren, levelled by her husband, also need to be addressed," Godiyal said....
