Sikh intellectuals demand repeal of law
Chandigarh, July 16 -- Sikh intellectuals on Wednesday demanded repeal of the anti-sacrilege law, stating that Sikh religious affairs should be addressed through Panthic institutions and established Sikh traditions rather than through state legislation.
Addressing the seminar "Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act, 2026, and the supremacy of the Shabad Guru: Panthic concerns, challenges and future policy", Gurpreet Singh, spokesperson of the Kendriya Sri Guru Singh Sabha, said governments should not try to settle political motives through religion.
A resolution was passed on the occasion, announcing that suggestions and recommendations during the seminar will be compiled into a policy document for consideration by Panthic institutions and wider circulation among the Sikh community.
The seminar was attended by Sikh scholars, legal experts, academicians, religious leaders, social activists and a large number of members of the Sikh Sangat from different walks of life. Justice Ranjit Singh (retd) was among those in attendance.
The speakers emphasised that Gurbani was universal, all-embracing and intended for the spiritual guidance of all humanity. It was observed during the seminar that confining Gurbani dissemination and management within the framework of state legislation or governmental authority raised serious questions concerning Sikh principles and the independent status of the Shabad Guru.HTC...
