India, April 16 -- As the summer days begin to stretch long, we find ourselves reaching for fresh fruits for one simple reason: it's refreshing. But these seasonal fruits such as watermelon, bel, mulberries, cherries and mango, are actually the ultimate hack for maximum health benefits.
Hydration isn't just about water anymore. Fruits like watermelon and muskmelon contain what experts call "gel water", which the body absorbs slowly and retains longer. "When you're out in the sun, hydration depletes quickly. These fruits help replenish it more effectively by providing natural minerals and a touch of sugar," says Dr Divya Gopal, Internal Medicine at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital. She adds, "Try a big slice of chilled watermelon or a bowl of muskmelon after being outdoors. You will feel the difference."
The 'no-fruit-after-6' rule is fading. Tart cherries and mulberries can support better sleep. "Having a small portion in the evening can be beneficial without causing digestive discomfort for most people. The key is moderation. Eating them at least an hour before bedtime works best," says Shalini Bliss, head dietitian at PSRI Hospital.
A fruit-rich diet may support skin health, though it isn't a replacement for sunscreen. Dr GS Arora, Consultant Dermatologist at Aastha Hospital, explains, "Antioxidants such as beta-carotene and Vitamin C help reduce oxidative stress caused by UV rays. Regular consumption of lycopene-rich fruits like watermelon can strengthen the skin's natural defence over time."...
