Jalandhar, Aug. 6 -- Rural and agricultural labour organisations staged a state-level protest in Jalandhar and marched towards chief minister Bhagwant Mann's residence in city on Wednesday to press for their long-pending demands, including hike in minimum daily wages, debt waiver and increase in social welfare pension. Baldev Singh Noorpoori, a labour union activist, said the labourer unions were promised a meeting with the chief minister five times over the past four years, but none took place. A day after sanitation workers called off their strike, National Commission for Scheduled Castes chairperson Kishor Makwana met those injured in the July 22 lathicharge and sought a detailed action taken report from administration. Farmer organisation Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Sidhupur) on Wednesday started an indefinite demonstration outside the residence of Punjab assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan at his native place in Faridkot district. The union leadership alleged that the state government had neither fulfilled assurances made to the family of two farmer brothers who died by suicide in March this year nor addressed issues related to loans advanced by Punjab State Cooperative Agriculture Development Banks(PADBs)....
