Amritsar, June 13 -- Punjab Police on Friday secured one-day remand of the 19-year-old youth, arrested for a sacrilege attempt at Gurdwara Shaheedi Asthan Baba Gurbaksh Singh in the Golden Temple complex.
The accused, Abhijit Singh, hailing from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was produced before a court, which granted one-day remand, said commissioner of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar.
On the intervening night between Wednesday and Thursday, an Akhand Path was underway at the gurdwara, when the youth entered the sanctum and picked up a sword displayed in front of the Guru Granth Sahib. Before the accused could carry out any further act, sewadars overpowered him and handed him over to police.
Police said investigation was underway to determine the motive behind the act. A case under Section 298 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult religion of any class) of the BNS had been registered against the accused, said Surinder Singh, ACP (Central).
Another police official said a team had been sent to the youth's native to check his background. A video has also surfaced in which SGPC employees are seen quizzing him. However, the youth does not disclose anything about the motive. HTC...
