Rs.7L fine slapped on vend owner for 'liquor langar' at Sec-9 market
Chandigarh, June 6 -- Nearly a fortnight after a retail liquor licensee was found serving vodka-laced ice lollies free-of-cost to the public at a market in Sector 9, the excise department imposed a Rs.7 lakh fine for violation under the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, and the Excise Policy 2026-27.
The accused Rajesh Sachdeva, 53, has already been booked under sections of the Punjab excise Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case was registered after videos of the incident, which was dubbed as a liquor langar, went viral on social media.
In the departmental proceedings, the excise department issued a show-cause notice to the licensee, M/s Bajaj Spirits Pvt. Ltd.
Officials said the act of mixing branded vodka with ice lollies and serving it openly amounted to multiple violations, including sale and service of liquor outside the permitted premises and indirect promotion of alcohol.
In a separate action, the excise department also cancelled the bar licence of M/s Kaindal Hospitality, SCO 11, Sector 7, for breach of excise rules....
