India, Aug. 4 -- Padma Vibhushan violinist-composer L Subramaniam has been conferred Sri Lanka's highest state honour by the country's Culture Minister in Colombo, while Violin Maestro Lakshminarayana Road was inaugurated in Jaffna in memory of his father, legendary violinist and guru V Lakshminarayana, who taught at Ramanathan College there. "I'm so happy that my father's legacy continues. It's a recognition not only of him but also of the violin, which he transformed from just an accompanying instrument to a major solo instrument today. He developed those techniques in Sri Lanka and later taught them to us (siblings)," Subramaniam tells us. Subramaniam inaugurated the road, located beside Ramanathan College and opposite the North Ceylon Sangeetha Sabha, in the presence of his wife, singer Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sri Lankan officials (see inset). Recalling his visit to Jaffna, he says, "It was a very nostalgic moment for me as it was at Nallur Kandaswamy Devasthanam Temple in Jaffna where I gave my first stage performance as a six-year-old. So, before the road's inauguration, I went to perform at the temple and took blessings from Lord Murugan."...
