Revolutionising advanced pacing with leadless pacemaker in Punjab
India, July 12 -- The cardiology department at Panacea Hospital has achieved another milestone in Jalandhar by successfully implanting a dual-chamber leadless pacemaker for the first time in the city. This marks an important step in bringing cutting-edge cardiac electrophysiology care to patients in Punjab.
Heart rhythm disorders are a significant cause of dizziness, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance and recurrent syncope (fainting), particularly among elderly patients. Many individuals mistakenly attribute these symptoms to ageing, often delaying medical attention, says Dr Amit Jain, chief interventional cardiologist at Panacea Hospital.
He recently treated a 70-year-old man suffering from recurrent syncope due to sick sinus syndrome, a condition in which the heart's natural pacemaker is unable to maintain an appropriate heart rate. Following a detailed evaluation, dual-chamber pacing was considered the most appropriate treatment option. "Advances in cardiac rhythm management have led to the development of dual-chamber leadless pacemakers, a minimally invasive alternative to conventional pacemakers. Unlike traditional systems, which require leads (wires) and a device pocket beneath the skin, these miniature devices are implanted directly inside the heart through a leg vein using a catheter-based procedure," Dr Jain said. The procedure was successfully completed in an hour at Panacea Hospital. The patient was able to walk within six hours of implantation and was discharged after two days, highlighting the potential benefits of faster recovery and enhanced patient comfort, he added. "The successof this case represents an important step towards bringing advanced pacing technologies closer to patients in Punjab and reflects the continued evolution of patient-centric cardiac care," Dr Jain said.
Dual-chamber leadless pacemakers are implanted directly inside the heart, one in the right atrium (upper chamber) and the other in the right ventricle (lower chamber). Together, they maintain the heart's natural synchrony and support efficient cardiac function....
