Rain kills 56, damages 1k houses in UP
Bhubaneswar, Sept. 28 -- A 71-year-old woman survived a two-hour drift through the crocodile-inhabited Birupa river in Odisha after losing her footing on its swollen banks on Sunday. A moment of dizziness sent Keshi Dalai into the swollen river, beginning an ordeal that carried her nearly 22 km downstream.
Birupa river is known to be a habitat of crocodiles.
By the time local residents spotted her at Balipatana in Kendrapara district, Dalai had spent nearly two hours in the water, repeatedly sinking beneath the surface and reappearing in the current. She was pulled into a boat by villagers and taken to shore, where they tried to revive and warm her before she was wheeled to a hospital.
"I felt dizzy and fell into the river," she said after her rescue. "I went under the water and then floated along with the current. The boys here pulled me out and brought me to safety."...
