Punjab govt failed to fulfil promises: Computer teachers
Mohali, June 2 -- Members of the Computer Teachers' Union Punjab (PICTES) today staged a three-hour gherao of the directorate general school education (DGSE) office in Mohali to protest what they termed the "Punjab government's failure to fulfil promises made to computer teachers".
Following the protest, teachers attempted to march towards Chandigarh. However, the UT police erected barricades to stop the march, resulting in standoffs and exchanges between protesters and cops.
Addressing the gathering, union leaders alleged that despite 6,640 computer teachers receiving a regularisation notification approved by the governor in December 2010 and appointment letters in 2011, they continue to be treated under the Punjab information and communication technology education society (PICTES) framework.
Gurwinder Singh, PICTES president, said "We have been given time to meet Punjab's finance minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, on June 3. Apart from that, to resolve the matter, we are given assurances of meeting with the education secretary on June 9." They further criticised the government for challenging a favourable high court ruling in the Supreme Court instead of implementing it....
