Punjab, Hry get meagre Khelo India funds: Seechewal
Jalandhar, March 26 -- Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal on Wednesday demanded that the Centre initiate immediate steps to strengthen sports infrastructure in rural areas in Punjab. Raising the question in the zero hour, Seechewal said that despite Punjab contributing nearly 50 Olympians to the nation, it is not receiving a fair share of sports funding. Citing last year's Khelo India budget, Seechewal said that on one hand, Gujarat received Rs.426.13 crore, while Uttar Pradesh got Rs.438.27 crore. "Punjab was allocated only Rs.78.02 crore and Haryana Rs.66.59 crore, despite producing the highest number of athletes. Such disparity is unjustified and against the principles of fairness," he said.
