Chandigarh, Sept. 20 -- More than six lakh registered graduates will vote on Sunday to elect 15 members to the Panjab University (PU) senate, in what is the largest constituency of the university's ongoing senate election process. Polling for the registered graduate constituency will be held from 8am to 5pm, with a lunch break from 1.15 pm to 2 pm, according to the university's latest election notice. A total of 51 candidates are in the fray for the 15 seats. Of these, two seats are reserved for Punjab, one for the union territory and the remaining 12 are open. The constituency has 6,25,784 registered electors. The university has made arrangements for polling across 271 booths in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. The university has also dispatched postal ballots to Army personnel, allowing eligible service voters to participate in the election. The counting of votes for the Registered Graduate constituency will begin at 9.30 am on September 23 at the Gymnasium Hall, Sector 14, PU campus. This counting will be held separately from the affiliated arts college constituencies, whose votes are scheduled to be counted on September 22. Sunday's polling is a major phase in the process of reconstituting the PU senate after the previous senate's term ended on October 31, 2024. The election process began on September 7 with polling for the principals and staff of technical and professional colleges. Six representatives were elected from these two categories, subject to the chancellor's approval. The next phase was held on September 14 for professors and associate/assistant professors of PU's teaching departments, with counting scheduled for September 16. The Sunday phase covers the registered graduate constituency as well as heads and faculty of affiliated arts colleges. The final election phase is scheduled for October 4, when six ordinary fellows will be elected by various faculties of the university. The election process, however, should not be treated as meaning that the new senate will automatically be constituted on October 4. The final constitution of the senate will follow completion of the election process and the required formalities, including approval by the chancellor.
