PU polls: ABVP wins prezpost for second straight year
Chandigarh, Sept. 1 -- Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won the post of president of Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) for the second time in a row, with its candidate Ankit Bidhan registering victory in the university polls, the result of which was declared here on Monday evening.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated ABVP's win assumes significance as the Students' Organisation of India (SOI), the student wing of the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), extended its support for the elections at the eleventh hour. This comes amid buzz of a re-alliance between the SAD and the BJP for the Punjab assembly polls due early next year.
The ABVP won the president's post for the first time last year. Bidhan secured 3,149 votes, defeating Aadil Brar of the Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), a student wing of the Aam Aadmi Party , by a margin of 512 votes. Brar got 2,637 votes, followed by Gurman Singh Sidhu of National Students Union of India, a student wing of the Congress, who stood third with 2,263 votes. SEE HT CHANDIGARH...
