Portion of Delhi-Doon expressway caves in, NHAI blames flooding
New Delhi, July 3 -- A section of road has allegedly caved in on the Rs.12,000-crore Delhi-Dehradun Expressway less than three months after it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with purported videos of the incident surfacing on social media on Thursday, raising questions over the construction quality, people familiar with the matter said. Several clips circulating on X, Instagram and Facebook showed damaged parts of the carriageway, waterlogged patches and motorists slowing down or changing lanes to avoid the potholes. In one of the videos, the person recording claimed that multiple vehicles had been damaged and some minor accidents have also been reported. After the buzz on social media, the Congress launched an attack on the central government alleging wide-scale corruption. "This shows that rampant corruption and embezzlement of funds took place in the construction of this expressway.," the party said in a post on X. Later in the day, the National Highways Authority of India said the affected stretch in Uttar Pradesh's Gogwan Jalalpur village in Muzaffarnagar district was repaired on Wednesday itself. NHAI blamed the flooding and damage on localised land disputes. Meanwhile, a newly constructed section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near Kim in Surat caved in on Tuesday following heavy rainfall.
