Poll deferred but candidates file papers in Kharar
Mohali, May 17 -- Confusion prevailed in Kharar on Saturday after nomination papers continued to be accepted for the municipal council elections despite the Punjab government informing the Punjab and Haryana high court that the polls would be deferred owing to the pending delimitation exercise.
It all started with 27 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates filing papers at the SDM office in Kharar. As news spread, candidates from other political parties also rushed to submit their papers. Before Saturday's developments, only three independents had filed nominations: two on Thursday and one on Friday before the high court proceedings. A Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) senior leader said, "We also filed 15 nominations for the Kharar municipal council elections." Later in the evening, Mohali deputy commissioner (DC) Komal Mittal said the confusion was due to the fact that the high court had not uploaded the orders yet.
The Punjab government had on Friday undertaken before the high court that the notification for the Kharar municipal council would be withdrawn, after petitioners challenged the villages that had been brought under the MC limits but were yet to be included in the delimitation exercise.
Petitioners' counsel Harsh Chopra questioned the continuation of the nomination process despite the undertaking in court. "Once the Hon'ble High Court recorded the statement of an officer of the department of local bodies for deferring the elections, there is no occasion for the SDM to continue to accept the nomination forms."HTC...
