Lucknow, Oct. 22 -- The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday ordered the removal of the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) and a Voter Registration Centre (VRC) operator of Pilibhit Sadar assembly constituency from voter list preparation and directed legal action against them over alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls. Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Navdeep Rinwa said the district election officer had been directed to immediately correct the electoral roll of Pilibhit Sadar. "All district election officers of Uttar Pradesh have been directed to take cognisance of the Pilibhit matter and thoroughly examine the voter lists of all assembly constituencies in their respective districts and submit report within two days in the CEO office," Rinwa said. The ECI acted after the Samajwadi Party and the Uttar Pradesh Congress alleged that voters' names were being altered in electoral rolls to deprive people of their voting rights. The parties cited alleged irregularities involving 13,150 entries in Pilibhit Sadar. According to Rinwa, an investigation by the district election officer found that searching the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number of some voters online displayed the details of other voters. "The ECI took immediate cognizance of a complaint submitted by the political parties regarding the EPIC number of voters registered in the voter list for the Pilibhit Sadar assembly constituency and directed the district election officer to investigate into the matter and submit a report immediately," he said. Legal action against the officials will be initiated under Section 32 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The district election officer has also been asked to report on the responsibilities of the assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) of Pilibhit Sadar.
