On Messi's patch, Vinicius Junior lays down a marker
Kolkata, June 26 -- Three minutes into first-half stoppage time, in the heat of Miami, Vinicius Jr danced. Like he had said he would in Doha because, "we Brazilians are a joyful people." On the hour mark, Matheus Cunha followed, shelving his surfing- swimming routine for a gentle swaying of the hips. The world may see more of this as Brazil slip into gear. Signs of that were evident in the 3-0 win against Scotland.
At the front and centre of Brazil feeling groovy is Vinicius Jr. In three games, he has four goals, the same as Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, albeit having played one match more, and one behind Lionel Messi. For long, it wasn't like this but Vinicius Jr shut out the noise that his best came only for Real Madrid. "It brings a certain relief," he said of his performance.
Vinicius Junior's brace on Wednesday placed him alongside Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Jairzinho and Romario - Brazilians who have scored in all group games in a World Cup. Barring Vinicius Jr, the rest have also won the golden bald statuette, which Brazil have not since 2002. But it also bears mentioning that never have they gone six editions without it.
Talk about that would be premature ahead of a round-of-16 meeting with either Japan, Netherlands or Sweden but on way to doing topping the group - they have now done that in every edition after 1978 - Brazil have improved in every half since the poor start against Morocco. "We could be quicker in possession," said Carlo Ancelotti after the match.
An eyebrow arched and the very definition of sangfroid, Ancelotti had pointed out that no team won the World Cup in their first match. His impressive resume as a club coach can shade the fact that Ancelotti, 67, knows the World Cup better than most. As a player, as an assistant-coach and now as head coach.
The Italian tweaked things after the 1-1 draw against Morocco. Cunha, whose goal made Brazil the only team with two in the list of top 10 scorers, replaced Igor Thiago in the starting 11.
Being less of a focal point and more of a false nine gives him the license to drop into midfield. Doing that opens space for Vinicius Jr and the wide right to cut inside.
The impressive Rayan, 19, has been in that role since Raphinha's injury. Rayan was responsible for the first goal, harrying Scott McKenna into an error before Vincius Jr made the most of the gift.
Getting Danilo in for Roger Ibanaez as right back was another change. Casemiro being asked to stay deep was a third. It gave Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Paqueta the licence to play upfield. It is no coincidence that five of the six goals Brazil have scored in their last two matches have had involvements from either midfielder.
It was Guimaraes's delivery that Vinicius Jr headed in to make it 2-0. This was his first international goal with a header and only the sixth in more than 400 club matches. Like Wesley Sneijder, who headed Brazil out of the 2010 World Cup, Vinicius Jr pointed to his head before showing off his moves. His celebration had been subdued so far. What better place for a change in routine than a stadium named Hard Rock.
The manner in which Vinicius Jr slipped away from defenders for that goal or how he dispossessed Jack Hendry earlier was proof of his form. On Ancelotti's advice, he has moved closer the centre-backs and it made Scotland's defence uncomfortable.
Slipping into areas they didn't expect him to, once he played a one-two with Rayan on the right, Vinicius Jr has laid down a marker on Lionel Messi's stomping ground. He deserved a hattrick. It would have been a first for Brazil since Pele in 1958.
"It's very rewarding to see Vinicius like this. He's a top-class player, one of the best in the world," said Ancelotti. In 13 matches under Ancelotti, Vincius Jr has scored seven goals. In 39 before that, he had got six.
The last goal was a trick and treat. Guimaraes took apart the defence and stroked a pass into space for Cunha to run around and score. Cunha came off for Neymar Jr who showed that he is ready. Just being on the pitch for Brazil after 981 days felt special. Neymar Jr wept.
"The Brazil shirt means something different.. You feel the weight of millions of people every time you put it on. After 981 days away, Neymar got to feel that again," said Ronaldo.
Tempting as it is to use Cunha's goal to define Brazil, this is not a team that will get the world to swoon over.
"A manager is judged by victory or defeat, not by whether the team plays well or badly," said Ancelotti. This is his team, one that wins balls on transitions and makes them count. It is solid, not spectacular, and lest we forget, that is what it takes to win World Cups....
