Hoshiarpur, July 21 -- A newly married couple allegedly died by suicide by jumping into Kandi canal near Bassi Maroof village, police said on Monday. As per information, the couple, both aged 25, left their shanty in Bassi Hussainpur Jattan on their motorcycle late at night after having a fight. On Monday morning, when residents spotted the motorcycle and shoes along the bank of the canal near Bassi Maroof village, they alerted the police and the volunteers of Baba Deep Singh Sewa Dal. When the divers of the Sewa Dal searched the water, they first recovered the woman's body. Later, the body of her husband was also found. Police said preliminary investigation revealed that the couple, hailing from the Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh, had recently got married and argued before they allegedly jumped into the canal. Sub-inspector Kiran Singh, station house officer of Hariana police station, said the couple cultivated vegetables in a field near Bassi Maroof and sold them in nearby towns for livelihood. He said the bodies had been kept at Hoshiarpur civil hospital's mortuary and the family had been informed, adding that further investigation was underway....
