NC MLAs to protest in Capital for J&K statehood
Srinagar, June 4 -- The ruling National Conference (NC) on Wednesday announced that its legislature party will launch a protest in New Delhi on the first day of the forthcoming monsoon session of Parliament to press for the immediate restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees for Jammu and Kashmir.
The announcement was made by the party's chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq. He said they will hold a protest in New Delhi on the first day of the monsoon session.
"The time has now come for us to talk to Delhi about whatever has been taken from us, whether statehood or constitutional guarantees. Statehood and constitutional guarantees are our basic demands. The NC Legislature Party has decided to hold a protest on the first day of the monsoon session at Jantar Mantar, or at any other venue we decide," he said.
The decision was taken during a meeting held earlier during the day. The meeting was attended by all ruling party legislators and five others, including CPI(M) legislator Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami.
The meeting, in which several issues related to J&K were discussed, lasted five to six hours. CM Omar Abdullah sought feedback from all the legislators. It comes a day after Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti wrote to leaders of political parties seeking joint efforts for statehood restoration.
Elaborating further, Sadiq said, "Today, a meeting under the chairmanship of chief minister Omar Abdullah was held in which all NC legislators, MPs, and legislators, who are allies of the NC, participated. Many issues were discussed, and progress was assessed," Sadiq said. "The other issues related to drugs, development, or other problems faced by the J&K government were also discussed today."
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister (CM) Omar Abdullah on Wednesday led his party MLAs and independents supporting him for a meeting at on off-site location, raising hackles from the opposition parties.
The CM had convened a meeting at his residence to discuss "matters of collective importance". As soon as the MLAs reached the residence, they boarded onto mini buses and were taken to Dachigam, sources said. However nobody from NC confirmed whether the venue was inside the Dachigam or in its vicinity. Many tourists also alleged that restrictions were imposed inside the park.
"We are off for an off-site to spend the day taking stock of the last 19 months - the good, the not so good & everything in between," Omar wrote.
In other post, the CM said the meeting was not shifted at the last moment, but it was a pre-planned move.
"I'm sorry to disappoint you but it has NOT "been shifted at the last moment". It was always my intention to conduct this meeting off-site and all arrangements have been made, days in advance, at location originally chosen by me," he said.
Peoples Conference chairman Sajjad Lone was the one to disclose the destination.
"A little bird told me. The MLAs have been shifted into the Wild Life area of Dachigam. And an ultimatum will be served. They will be told, ' Fall in Line' or else stay back and providecompany to inhabitants of the Zoo. But the inhabitants of the zoo are apparently aghast," he said. PDP leader, Iltija Mufti, said, "In Kashmir MLAs are more endangered than Hanguls! Must designate a special separate wildlife park for them."
BJP media incharge Sajid Yusuf Shah also took a swipe on the venue chosen for the extraordinary meeting of NC legislators...
