Mohali MC chalks out 47 designated dog-feeding points
Mohali, Aug. 15 -- The Mohali municipal corporation (MC) has proposed 47 designated feeding points for community dogs across 14 sectors, phases and areas.
This is in keeping with the Supreme Court's August 2025 ruling under which municipal authorities were told to create dedicated feeding spaces in every municipal ward and prohibit feeding on streets. The idea was to prevent aggressive dog packs from congregating in residential areas and children's play areas amid growing concerns over dog-bite cases and man-animal conflict.
According to data provided by the civil surgeon's office in Phase 6, the district has recorded 9,710 dog-bite cases in the first four months of this year. In 2025, the annual tally stood at 20,562 while in 2024, it stood at 19,252.
The 47 locations, spanning across Sectors 66, 70, 77 and 78; Industrial Area Phase 9; and Phases 1, 2, 3A, 3B1, 3B2, 6, 8 and 11, are not final yet. The MC has invited suggestions and objections from residents, resident welfare associations (RWAs), regular dog feeders, institutions and other stakeholders before finalising the locations.
While the MC identified the sites after considering factors such as safety, accessibility, existing movement of community dogs and the possibility of avoiding inconvenience or conflict with the public, residents can flag their concerns if any.
Residents have a week's time from the date of notification, i.e August 14, to give their suggestions.
They can cite concerns relating to safety, accessibility, visibility, movement of community dogs and the possibility of conflict with residents or other users of the area, and also suggest alternative feeding locations.
The MC has asked them to indicate whether an alternative site is at a safe distance from children's play areas or schools, causes no obstruction to traffic or residents, has a community-dog population and hassufficient space for hygienic feeding.
The MC has also included GPS coordinates and map links of its own proposed sites to help residents identify the sites....
