India, Aug. 28 -- Liver cancer cases are rising in India, particularly among elderly patients in Punjab and surrounding regions. Many are diagnosed at a stage when surgery is not possible. Earlier, treatment options were often limited to medicines or supportive care. Today, modern minimally invasive treatments offer new hope without the need for major surgery. A major breakthrough is interventional radiology, a specialty that treats cancer from inside the body without open surgery. Using small needles or tubes guided by CT or ultrasound, these procedures are safe, less painful and enable faster recovery - an important advantage for older patients. Key treatments include microwave ablation, in which a thin needle delivers microwave energy to destroy small tumours, usually requiring only a short hospital stay. TACE (transarterial chemoembolization) delivers anti-cancer drugs directly into the tumour while blocking its blood supply. A more advanced option is TARE or Y-90 therapy, in which radioactive particles target cancer cells from within the tumour, with fewer side effects. These therapies are especially beneficial for elderly patients and those with diabetes, heart disease or liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis and fatty liver. Early diagnosis through regular check-ups remains critical. In North India - covering Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu - access to such world-class care has improved significantly. Importantly, these minimally invasive procedures often involve shorter hospital stays and a reduced burden on families, and may be covered under government schemes or health insurance, subject to eligibility. Liver cancer is no longer a condition without hope. Families should ask their doctors about these new-age treatment options and seek an expert opinion.
