Mathura boat tragedy: Toll climbsto 11; vessel operator among 2 held
Agra/Ludhiana, April 12 -- The toll in the boat capsize tragedy in Yamuna river in Mathura's Vrindavan rose to 11 on Saturday after the recovery of one more body, officials aware of the matter said, adding that the boat's operator and a contractor have been arrested.
The deceased has been identified as Manik Tandon, 25, a resident of Abohar, Fazilka district, said police.
A resident of New Abadi, he worked as a salesman in a steel company. He and his relatives were among the around 120 devotees who had travelled to Vrindavan from Jagraon as part of a four-day religious trip.
Family members said Tandon was the only brother to his sister and had lost his father at a very young age. He was scheduled to get married in September this year.
Another Fazilka native, Pankaj Malhotra, 35, is among those still missing. A resident of Aggarwal Colony, he had travelled to Mathura with his maternal uncle and aunt from Jagraon. "While the bodies of his relatives have been recovered, Pankaj remains untraceable," said Gursevak Singh Brar, deputy superintendent of police, Jalalabad (Fazilka).
The authorities flagged overcrowding, lack of safety gear and ongoing construction activity as key factors leading to the accident. "Preliminary findings indicate the boat was overcrowded and lacked basic safety measures such as life jackets. Survivors said repeated requests were made to the boatman to turn back, but were ignored," said superintendent of police (rural) SC Rawat.
There were also no clear regulations on the number of passengers allowed on a boat. One of the survivors alleged, "More than 40 people had initially boarded the vessel. Six were later shifted to another boat, but 38 people still remained on the ill-fated one, far exceeding its capacity."
The incident occurred around 3 pm on Friday when a boat carrying 38 tourists from Shringar Ghat towards Devraha Baba Ashram hit a floating drum of a pontoon bridge being moved using a JCB machine, and capsized near Kesi Ghat in Vrindavan. SP Rawat said, "Based on complaint by sub-inspector Aakash Chauhan, an FIR has been filed at the Mant police station against contractor Narayan Sharma, 52, and boatman Pappu, alias Dauji, 38, under BNS Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). Both of them have been arrested."
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann visited Jagraon on Saturday to offer condolences to the families of the victims. Accompanied by local MLA Sarvjit Kaur Manuke, Ludhiana Central MLA Ashok Kumar Pappi, the chief minister met the bereaved families and assured them that the Punjab government stood firmly with them in this difficult time and would extend every possible assistance.
However, no announcement regarding financial compensation was made during the visit. He stated that if the families desired, the state government would establish a memorial or a library in memory of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
Mann shared that the government had already dispatched teams of divers to assist in rescue efforts, while maintaining close coordination with the Uttar Pradesh government.
Stressing accountability and prevention, Mann emphasised that the safety and security of pilgrims at religious sites must be ensured at all costs, adding that he had taken up the matter with the Uttar Pradesh chief minister to strengthen safeguards and prevent such tragedies in the future.
During a media interaction, Mann stated, "Requisite medical treatment is being provided to the survivors. I am in constant touch with my counterpart in Uttar Pradesh and closely monitoring the ongoing rescue and relief operations."...
