Man shoots uncle, friend dead; arrested while fleeing to Delhi
Karnal, June 19 -- Haryana Police on Thursday arrested 24-year-old Sahil Malik near the Bhigan Toll Plaza in Murthal, Sonepat, on Chandigarh-Delhi National Highway-44, thwarting his attempt to flee to the national capital just hours after he allegedly committed a double murder. Sahil, a resident of Panipat, is suspected of killing his paternal uncle in Punjab's Dera Bassi and a friend in Haryana on Wednesday night. He will be produced in the local court on Friday.
Following the arrest by Sonepat's special anti-gangster unit, Murthal police and Special Task Force (STF), the suspect, a native of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, was handed over to the Panipat police. Investigators from Dera Bassi also joined the probe.
Police officials said Malik first shot his uncle, Rahul Malik, 44, at his office, Jai Ambe Bhalai Wood Hardware and Construction Private Limited, in Dera Bassi. Heena, the victim's sister and an eyewitness, told police that Sahil fired multiple shots at Rahul in her presence. After the shooting, the accused allegedly placed the injured Rahul in a car and fled from the scene. He then transported the body 150km in an SUV to Panipat, where he shot and killed his friend, Ankush, 26, inside the vehicle.
Malik dumped both bodies near the Delhi Parallel canal bypass in Budsham village in Samalkha before fleeing.
According to Ankush's uncle, Surjeet, the victim, who worked as an accountant at a cement store, left home on a motorcycle around 8 pm after receiving a phone call from Sahil.
When Ankush failed to return, family members called his phone; an unidentified individual, supposedly a passer-by, answered and directed them to the Budsham village site, where the two bodies were discovered at around 10 pm.
The bodies were subsequently moved to the district civil hospital in Panipat for post-mortem. CIA-1 in-charge Inspector Phool Kumar said that during initial interrogation, the accused confessed to both killings. Kumar said the accused also revealed that he had a long-standing property dispute with his uncle. "Harbouring a grudge, he took his father's licensed double-barrel gun to his uncle's office in Dera Bassi on June 17 and shot him dead," he said.
"To evade the police, he loaded the body into his uncle's SUV and drove to Panipat, arriving between 8 pm and 9 pm. Upon reaching Panipat, he called his friend Ankush and asked him to meet at the Sector 13/17 cut. He picked Ankush up in the vehicle and drove off. After a while, he shot and killed Ankush inside the moving vehicle," the Inspector said. It was also revealed that Sahil was a co-accused alongside Ankush in an assault case registered at the Tehsil Camp police station.
He stated that in 2024, at Ankush's behest, he had joined his friends in assaulting two youths, but Ankush later failed to support or advocate for him regarding that case.
"Harbouring a grudge, he called Ankush the same night under the pretext of meeting him and shot him dead before dumping both the bodies," Kumar added.
Panipat deputy superintendent of police Satish Vats said that a case has been registered at the Samalkha police station. The crime investigation agency is conducting the probe.
Based on a complaint filed by Surjeet at the Samalkha police station, a case was registered against the accused under Sections 103 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Post-mortems for both bodies were conducted, and they were handed over to the respective families.Mohali police have registered a case under Section 103 of the BNS against the accused....
