MAN ARRESTED FOR DUPING UT RESIDENT OF Rs.3l IN CYBER FRAUD
Chandigarh, Jan. 4 -- The cyber crime police station has arrested a key accused in an APK-based cyber fraud case in which a city resident was duped of over Rs.3.26 lakh.
The accused has been identified as Devansh Goyal, 23, a resident of Gurugram, Haryana. According to the complaint filed by Ramesh Singh Rawat, a resident of Maloya, Chandigarh, he received a WhatsApp message containing a link titled 'MPparivahan APK', purportedly related to a pending vehicle challan. After clicking the link, his mobile phone began malfunctioning, indicating the installation of malicious software.
Soon after, the complainant started receiving multiple OTPs, calls and messages from unknown numbers, followed by unauthorised transactions from his credit cards. Police said Rs.1,36,294 was withdrawn from his AU Small Finance Bank credit card and Rs.1,90,000 from his ICICI Bank credit card, taking the total amount to Rs.3,26,294.
Investigators said critical banking alerts and OTP messages were allegedly deleted from the victim's phone to delay detection. The defrauded amount was reportedly used to purchase gift cards, which were redeemed to buy online gold delivered in the Delhi-NCR region using SIM cards linked to the fraud.
The accused was arrested from Gurugram, and an iPhone 13 Pro Max along with the mobile number allegedly used in the crime was recovered. Police said further custodial interrogation is required to trace the money trail and identify other members of the syndicate....
