Malerkotla doctor performs rare surgery
India, April 27 -- In a rare medical feat, Dr Piara Singh, a laparoscopic surgeon at Hazrat Halima Hospital, Malerkotla, successfully operated on a 43-year-old woman whose organs were positioned in a mirror image of normal anatomy - a condition known as Situs Inversus Totalis.
The patient approached Dr Singh with severe abdominal pain. An abdominal ultrasound revealed the anomaly: her heart was located on the right side of the chest, while her liver and gallbladder were on the left. The condition, which occurs in approximately 1 in 10,000 people, makes surgical intervention highly challenging due to the reversed anatomy. "Operating on a Situs Inversus patient is like working in a mirror. Every landmark and every angle is reversed. It requires precise planning and adaptability during surgery," said Dr Singh.
Despite the complexity, the laparoscopic procedure was completed successfully. The patient recovered well and was discharged just two days after the surgery without any complications.
Situs Inversus Totalis is a congenital condition in which all major visceral organs are transposed from their normal positions. While many individuals with the condition live normal lives, diagnosis and surgical procedures become significantly more difficult when medical intervention is required.
Dr Singh's successful operation highlights the growing surgical expertise in smaller cities of Punjab. "This case shows that with skill and preparation, even rare and complex surgeries can be managed safely at regional hospitals," he added. The patient is now recovering at home and has resumed her daily activities.
