Losing yourself in love? Therapist flags 3 signs
India, Aug. 30 -- Putting a partner's needs ahead of your own can gradually make you lose touch with your identity. And often, it's not easy to realise when you may be "abandoning yourself for someone else". Licensed mental health counsellor Jeffrey Meltzer recently shared three signs to watch out for.
Your partner's approval starts influencing how you look, behave and express yourself. "You may change how you dress, hide parts of your personality, or stop sharing certain opinions because you're afraid they may like you less," Meltzer says.
You suppress your needs to avoid conflict or disappointment, even when something bothers you. Meltzer says, "Every time you ignore what you really feel, you lose a little trust in yourself."
Depending on a partner for support is normal, even healthy; but problems can arise when they become your sole source of emotional stability, identity or security. "Relationships are supposed to involve interdependence," Meltzer explains. This can come at the cost of personal goals, friendships and other relationships.
A healthy relationship allows for compromise without requiring you to give up your identity, boundaries or needs....
