Kolkata, Sept. 18 -- The last central committee member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), Asim Mandal, was arrested from Polerhat in the eastern fringes of Kolkata on Thursday afternoon, police said. Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari praised the West Bengal Police's sharp technical intelligence and exceptional operational competence in arresting 64-year-old Mandal alias Akash, who had been evading law enforcement for over 15 years across inter-state forest belts. "Mandal alias Akash, a senior CPI-Maoist leader, was arrested from Polerhat. He has around 17 cases pending against him in Jharkhand and about a dozen cases pending in West Bengal. He carried a reward of Rs.1 crore in Jharkhand. A team of officials from Jharkhand Police is also expected to come to Kolkata to question him," commissioner of Kolkata Police Ajay Kumar Nand told the media. Police said that after the death of top Maoist leader Koteswar Rao, alias Kishenji, who headed the rebels' eastern India operations in November 2011, Akash along with a few other members moved to Jharkhand. They moved from Dalma to Saraikhela and Saranda. He has been active mostly in Jharkhand since 2012. Misir Besra, a Maoist Politburo member, was arrested in Jharkhand's Dhanbad on July 28. "He was a member of the Misir Besra squad. But after a series of actions by security forces and Besra's arrest in July, the squad got dislodged. Around 10-12 members of the squad took shelter in various hideouts. Based on intelligence inputs, Mandal was arrested," said Nand, adding, police have seized some pen drives, cash, documents and some letters from him.
