June WPI inflation rises to 9.87% led by food, fuel
New Delhi, July 15 -- India's wholesale inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), edged up to 9.87% in June from 9.74% in May, according to data released by the commerce and industry ministry on Tuesday. This was the highest reading under the new WPI series, for which inflation data is available from April 2024.
While the acceleration in WPI inflation in June was driven by primary articles, inflation in the fuel and power category eased compared with May. However, fuel inflation remained much higher than that of primary articles. This suggests that the West Asia crisis continued to drive WPI inflation, even as its impact eased compared with May.
On the monthly basis, the WPI rose 0.27% in June, slower than 1.45%, 4.11%, and 0.92% growth in March, April, and May, respectively. Prices of primary articles increased 2.11% in June, while the fuel and power index fell 1.68%,whereas the manufactured products index was unchanged.
Despite the month-on-month growth easing in June, WPI is up 6.89% compared to February, the last month before the West Asia war began. The fuel and power index is up 24.83% compared with 4.46% in manufactured products and 4.03% in primary articles. Energy therefore continues to account for much of the cumulative price shock of the war, although the incremental pressure in June shifted towards food and other primary commodities.
Inflation in primary articles, which have a weight of 22.76% in the WPI basket, accelerated to 7% in June from 4.99% in May. Food articles inflation rose from 3.60% to 5.49%, non-food articles from 9.49% to 11.07%, and minerals from 4.91% to 9.45%. The broader WPI food index, which combines food articles and manufactured food products, recorded inflation of 6.14% in June, up from 4.49% in May and the highest since January 2025....
