June rain deficit at 75%, monsoon likely to arrive in city in next 2-3 days: MeT
Chandigarh, July 1 -- City saw 75% rain deficit in June, with only 39.3 mm of rain recorded against the normal of 155.5 mm, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials.
Relief is, however, in sight as the southwest monsoon is expected to hit the city within the next two to three days, they added.
The normal is calculated by taking the average of the past 30 years. This year's rain was the lowest in two years. In 2025, 213 mm rain was recorded in the city while in 2024, only 11.9 mm rain was recorded.
Due to the low rain, the average maximum temperature this month stood at 38.1degC, higher than last year's 37.3degC.
IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul said rain in June is primarily dependent on the onset of monsoon. While the normal date for the onset of monsoon is June 26, this time it has been pushed to July. The onset of monsoon is usually accompanied with heavy rains, which didn't happen this year; thus the deficiency.
As per the recent bulletin shared by IMD, monsoon entered parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on Monday and is likely to reach Chandigarh in the next two to three days.
As a fresh western disturbance is also likely to affect the city around July 2, the confluence of the pre-monsoon showers with the western disturbance can lead to heavy rains in the city.
Due to the cloudy conditions in the city and rain in Himachal Pradesh, the city's temperature took a plunge.
The maximum dropped from 39.6degC on Monday to 37degC on Tuesday, still 1.5 degrees above normal. The minimum slipped from 30.3degC on Monday to 29.8degC on Tuesday, 2.7 degrees above normal.
Humidity remained between 54% and 65%....
