Kolkata, Aug. 31 -- Political graffiti on the walls of Kolkata's Jadavpur University (JU) was whitewashed a day after chief minister Suvendu Adhikari said, during an address outside the campus, that his government would not allow JU to become a free ground for Maoist and Palestine sympathisers, and elements seeking Kashmir's independence. The development comes amid unrest at the university following clashes between the ABVP and SFI last week. A professor, who requested anonymity, said, "A contractor hired by the university's maintenance department covered most of the graffiti with white paint on Saturday morning. The authorities do not want the university to be drawn into a controversy." The whitewashed graffiti included pro-Palestine, anti-Nazi and anti-fascist messages. The SFI's Jadavpur unit announced via a socialmedia post on Sunday evening that it would hold a protest on Monday to oppose the university's action. State sports and youth services minister Dr Indranil Khan, said, "JU is widely acknowledged as a centre of excellence. The campus should be free of radical politics," he said. CPI(M) leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, a former Kolkata mayor, criticised the move, and said, "Campuses are where young people are encouraged to think freely and exchange ideas.
