NEW DELHI, Sept. 21 -- Putting the lingering shadows of an underwhelming World Cup campaign behind them, India men opened their Asian Games hockey title defence with a 13-1 demolition of Indonesia at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara on Sunday. For a team desperate to win gold and secure direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the Pool A game was some statement of intent. However, they started their campaign in ruthless fashion with striker Dilpreet Singh scoring four goals (18th, 19th, 37th, 49th). Shilanand Lakra (6th, 35th) and Sukhjeet Singh (38th, 48th) scored a brace each, with Abhishek (12th), Rajinder Singh (19th), Mandeep Singh (21st), skipper Harmanpreet Singh (28th) and Jugraj Singh (49th) too chipping in. This was India's third successive win over Indonesia. India will next face Sri Lanka on Tuesday. The Indian women too launched their campaign in ruthless fashion, hammering Uzbekistan 19-0 in Pool B. Ranked world No.8, and second in Asia behind China (world No.4), India proved too strong for the 65th-ranked Uzbeks. The Salima Tete-led outfit dismantled the opposition, after logging four goals in the first quarter. It is the third biggest win for the women's team in the Asian Games. India's biggest victory margin at the Asian Games is 22-0, against Hong Kong in New Delhi in 1982, followed by the 21-0 win against Kazakhstan in 2018 Jakarta. The star of the goalfest was Deepika Sehrawat, who pumped in eight goals (8th, 22nd, 25th, 33rd, 36th, 38th, 41st, 54th). Ishika registered a hat-trick (11th, 42nd, 54th), while Navneet Kaur (23rd, 45th) and Lalthantluangi (43rd, 51st) scored twice each. Lalremsiami (7th), Baljeet Kaur (12th), Neha Goyal (18th) and Sakshi Rana (43rd) were the other scorers. India next play Indonesia in Group B on Monday....
