HP urban local body polls: 1,147 in fray as237 opt out of race
Shimla, May 7 -- As many as 1,147 candidates remain in fray for elections to 51 urban local bodies, including the four municipal corporations, after 237 candidates withdrew their nominations on Wednesday, officials said.
The Himachal Pradesh state election commission also allotted symbols to candidates.
According to the commission, a total of 1,426 nomination papers were initially filed. Of these, 32 were rejected during scrutiny, leaving 1,394 valid nominations. Subsequently, 237 candidates withdrew their papers on the last date of withdrawal, finalising the contesting candidates at 1,147.
Polling is scheduled to be held on May 17 from 7 am to 3 pm through Electronic Voting Machines. Results for municipal councils and nagar panchayats will be announced on the same day following counting of votes, while for the 4 MCs counting will be held on May 31 from 9 am.
The commission said that 10 candidates have been elected unopposed from various wards, including nagar panchayat Karsog, Jawalamukhi and Nerwa. No nomination was filed for Ward No. 7 of nagar panchayat Karsog in Mandi district....
