Houses of SC families torched, sarpanch, five others booked
AMRITSAR, April 2 -- The sarpanch of Vein Puin village in Tarn Taran district and five others have been booked for allegedly setting ablaze the houses of two Scheduled Caste (SC) families following a dispute on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night.
According to the complaint, sarpanch Baldev Singh alias Gora, who is brother-in-law of Khadoor Sahib MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura, along with his associates, allegedly barged into the victims' homes, poured petrol and set their belongings on fire.
Lalpura, on March 30, was acquitted by the Punjab and Haryana high court, along with seven others, in a 2013 case of molestation and assault involving a woman from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community after a compromise was reached between the parties.
Lalpura denied any link to the incident and said police should act according to the law.
Following the incident, Tarn Taran superintendent of police (Headquarters) Sukhmaninder Singh, SDM Sanjeev Sharma, and other officials rushed to the spot.
The Goindwal Sahib police on Wednesday registered a case against the six accused, including the sarpanch, based on the statements of the aggrieved families, said Tarn Taran senior superintendent of police (SSP) Surendra Lamba.
"Other accused named in the FIR are Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukha, Gurvansh Singh, Gajji, Jobanjit Singh and Aloo. Three unknown persons have also been nominated in the case. The FIR has been registered under Sections 326(G), 332 (C), 351(2), 351(3), 324(4), 191, 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 3(2)(5) of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and 25, 27 of the Arms Act," the police officials said.
Complainant Dalbir Kaur, who lives in the village with her son, Lovepreet Singh, told the police that on Tuesday evening, the sarpanch, along with other accused, entered her house armed with weapons.
"The sarpanch inquired about her son, who was not present at the time. Following this, on the sarpanch's instructions, the accused forcibly entered the rooms and set them on fire using petrol they had brought along. They also vandalised household items before fleeing the scene," she said.
Kaur further said that the accused also set fire to the house of Sukhdev Singh alias Sonu, son of Shingara Singh, in the same village.
"A minor dispute between my son and the sarpanch a few days ago triggered this act of revenge," Kaur alleged.
Khadoor Sahib SDM Sanjeev Kumar Sharma visited the village and said both civil and police administrations acted promptly upon receiving information and registered an FIR based on the victims' statements.
"As per the directions of deputy commissioner Rahul, the losses suffered by the victims will be compensated soon. Strict action will be taken against those responsible as per the law," he added.
Lalpura said anyone involved should not be spared.
"I have no link with this incident. If he (Gora) has committed any crime, the police must take action according to the law. I have also asked the DSP concerned not to spare anyone involved in this offence," the MLA said.
Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia, along with Khadoor Sahib former MLA Ravinder Singh Brahmpura, visited the victims' houses.
"SAD has submitted a formal written complaint along with complete video evidence to the national commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) in New Delhi," Brahmpura said.
Congress leader and ex-MLA Ramanjeet Singh Sikki also visited the victims' houses and condemned the incident....
