House to elect panels, take up infra projects
Chandigarh, Feb. 8 -- The Chandigarh municipal corporation is set to hold its 358th General House meeting on February 11, where the election and constitution of key committees for 2026 will be among the most significant agenda items, along with consideration of civic infrastructure works. This will be the first House Meeting of this year and also the first with Saurabh Joshi as the mayor.
One of the major agendas that will be taken up is the election of members to the Finance and Contract Committee, considered one of the most influential panels of the corporation as it oversees financial approvals and contract-related matters.
Five councillors - Harjeet Singh, Jasbir Singh (Ward 24), Kanwarjeet Singh, Rajinder Kumar Sharma and Yogesh Dhingra - have filed nomination papers for the committee. The House is expected to formally declare them elected.
Another key agenda pertains to the constitution of three statutory committees for 2026. These include the water supply and sewerage disposal committee, the roads committee, and the house tax assessment committee.
As per provisions of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, extended to Chandigarh, the corporation is mandated to constitute these committees to manage core civic functions and policy execution.
Apart from committee-related matters, the House will also deliberate on a proposal for reconstruction of damaged footpaths around various parks in Sector 40-C. The project has been estimated to cost Rs.85.83 lakh and has been proposed following a request from the area councillor citing public convenience and safety concerns.
