HC raises brows as 23k held in Punjab in 5 months
Chandigarh, Aug. 28 -- The Punjab and Haryana high court (HC) has warned against implication of people in drugs cases as it came to light that between March and July, nearly 20,000 FIRs were registered and 23,647 were arrested in non-commercial quantity seizures amid the government's "Yudh Nasheyan Virudh" campaign in Punjab.
"In such circumstances, the probability of fabricated recoveries increases, with the potential misuse of the said drug even by police officials. This concern is particularly significant in light of recent directives by the chief minister and the Punjab DGP, which suggest that police officials achieving higher case counts will receive recognition," the bench of justice Sandeep Moudgil observed even as state's advocate general MS Bedi assured that no innocent person would be harassed or put to unwarranted prosecution without having any concrete and cogent evidence against them.
As per data presented before the court, there was an unprecedented rise in registration of FIRs (20,000 in number) with 23,647 arrests involving non-commercial quantities. The contraband recovered was tablets, either loose or in strips, without having batch number and expiry date. The petitioners' lawyers had apprehended serious concerns of false implication. It had come to fore that in six months (November 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025), drugs cases involving manufactured tablets, capsules in 34 units or wings in the state stood at 2,107. But after the campaign was launched in March, an unprecedented rise with 20,000 FIRs and 23,647 arrests were witnessed till July 27.
The pleas have been disposed of with assurance from the DGP that no false case would be registered under the Yudh Nasheyan Virudh" campaign....
