HC asks Ganguly to flag objectionable scenes in Doosra
India, Oct. 30 -- T
he Delhi High Court on Thursday asked former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly to identify specific scenes in filmmaker Abhinay Deo's sports drama Doosra that allegedly violate his personality rights. The film, which released in theatres last week, follows a young girl inspired by Ganguly's iconic shirtless celebration at Lord's after India's NatWest Series victory over England in 2002.
Hearing a lawsuit filed by Ganguly and Luv Films LLP, Justice Tejas Karia directed the plaintiffs to prepare a table identifying the objectionable scenes, complete with timestamps and grounds for objection. "Prepare a table with time stamp of the objectionable scene and narration of the objections...We will see it over the weekend and we will hear you," the court said, listing the matter for November 2.
The court also directed the makers of Doosra to submit a copy of the film on a pen drive. Luv Films, which is producing Ganguly's upcoming biopic Dada, starring Rajkummar Rao, has alleged that Doosra infringes its contractual rights. The court asked the production house to submit the biopic's manuscript in a sealed envelope and explain how those rights were allegedly violated.
Ganguly's counsel argued that the film uses his identity without consent, while the makers maintained that it is a fictional story and that the cricket footage was duly licensed. Despite Doosra already being in theatres, the plaintiffs sought an interim injunction, pointing out that the film is yet to be released on OTT platforms. htc...
