Chandigarh, Sept. 16 -- The Haryana transport department has decided to install 775 automated number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras at petrol pumps across the national capital region (NCR) districts with an aim to identify end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) and ensure compliance with environmental norms. In the first phase, the cameras will be installed in the NCR districts of Faridabad, Gurugram, Sonepat and Jhajjar. The ANPR installation involved a cost of Rs.41.74 crore. Transport minister Anil Vij said 2,780 ANPR cameras are required to be installed across the state. Vij said that the initiative is being implemented in accordance with the directions issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). A total of 249 ANPR cameras will be installed in Gurugram, 215 in Sonepat, 195 in Jhajjar and 116 in Faridabad. Vij said that, as per the CAQM directions, the installation of ANPR cameras is to be completed by September 30, 2026. Thereafter, from October 1, 2026, fuel will not be supplied to ELVs registered in Haryana.
