Harvey Weinstein rape case retrial ends in mistrial yet again
India, May 17 -- A New York judge declared a mistrial in disgraced filmmaker Harvey Weinstein's rape retrial after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict on a third-degree rape charge involving Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actor.
The deadlock leaves one of the most closely watched cases of the #MeToo era unresolved again.
The case centres on Mann's allegation that Weinstein raped her at a Manhattan (USA) hotel in 2013. Weinstein, 74, had denied all allegations of sexual assault. A juror, Josh Hadar, told reporters that he and eight others had wanted to acquit Weinstein. Judge Curtis Farber has given prosecutors 30 days to decide whether to pursue another trial.
Mann, who has testified in three trials, said in a statement, "I chose to testify in three trials because I am telling the truth. For years I have had to relive some of the hardest moments of my life while facing attempts to shame, humiliate and discredit me in open court."
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg also expressed disappointment. His statement read, "For nearly a decade, Jessica Mann has fought for justice. Her perseverance and bravery are inspiring to survivors everywhere."
Weinstein remains behind bars due to other sex-crime convictions. He could face up to 25 years in prison on a separate conviction involving another accuser, Miriam Haley, for which he has yet to be sentenced. A hearing is set for June 24. htc...
