India, Aug. 7 -- Young designers are giving handloom a contemporary spin by pairing traditional weaves with streetwear silhouettes and global styling. For their label NorBlack NorWhite, Toronto-born designers Mriga Kapadiya and Amrit Kumar work with weaver clusters across India to reinterpret artisanal textiles. "We like to reinterpret handloom textiles through our own silhouettes, colour language, and way of dressing; from khadi cotton in Bengal and ikat in Telangana to weaves of northeast India," says Kumar. Their Eastern Horizon dress combines textiles woven on backstrap looms by women in Lakhimpur, Assam, with splatter-dyed Bengal khadi or ikat from Telangana.
