Goods worth Rs.7 crore seizedduring tax evasion crackdown
CHANDIGARH, June 6 -- Finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Friday said that the state taxation department has impounded more than 200 vehicles and seized goods worth nearly Rs.7 crore during a special enforcement drive in the iron and steel sector.
Cheema said the operation targeted bogus billing and transportation of goods without valid documents. He said that penalties imposed on violators are expected to exceed Rs.3.5 crore. The minister said the drive was carried out by the state investigation and preventive unit in key iron and steel hubs, including Mandi Gobindgarh, Khanna and adjoining areas, with the objective of curbing revenue leakage through illegal trade practices.
Cheema said that over 2,400 metric tonnes of iron scrap and finished steel goods were intercepted during the operation....
