Girl dies by suicide at Manipur relief camp
IMPHAL, March 4 -- A 17-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide at a relief camp in Manipur's Bishnupur district on Tuesday, police said, adding that an unnatural death case has been registered.
Due to the ongoing tensions in the ethnic strife-torn state, the girl and her family were displaced from Leimaram Waroiching, Bishnupur, and had been taking shelter at the Leimaram High School relief camp since March 3, 2023, police said.
In December last year, the Manipur administration had resettled 257 displaced people from 64 households in a relief camp in Bishnupur.
"A few days back, the girl had asked her family to return to their home as she didn't want to stay at the relief camp. On Tuesday, she was found dead at the northern side of the camp's veranda," a police officer said.
Police registered a case under Section 194 (unnatural death) of BNSS and the body was sent to the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) Hospital, Imphal, for post-mortem examination, the officer added.
"The girl was studying in Class 12 and was appearing for the ongoing higher secondary examination conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur (CoSHEM). The examination began on February 17 and will end on March 20," the officer said.
Of the 31,530 students appearing for the exam, 412 are internally displaced students from both hills and valley.
The state government had implemented a phased rehabilitation programme and was targeting to resettle 40,000 displaced people by March 31....
