India, Sept. 8 -- Mumbai's Gaiety Galaxy, popularly known as G7, hit a roadblock on Monday, with no films being screened as the complex reportedly shut temporarily. A post shared by a social media user showed a notice issued by the Bandra Police outside the theatre, stating that the cinema hall had been closed because the management had not renewed its licence. The theatre screened films regularly until Sunday, but suspended all shows from Monday. Owner Manoj Desai, however, attributed the closure to a technical fault. "The actual reason is that some of the theatre's cables got burnt. We have to arrange new cables from Lohar Chawl in South Mumbai. Until that is done, our shows cannot resume. It is just a technical issue, nothing more than that," he tells us. Gaiety Galaxy opened on November 24, 1972, with filmmaker Ramesh Sippy's Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) as its inaugural film. The G7 multiplex originally comprised three theatres: Gaiety, Galaxy and Gemini. Gaiety and Galaxy are its largest auditoriums, with both stall and balcony seating.
