Flash floods disrupt road connectivity
Shimla/Dharamshala, July 9 -- Flash floods triggered by rains disrupted road connectivity in some parts of Rampur subdivision of Shimla district as moderate rains continued to lash Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday, officials said.
A rise in water level following the floods damaged a temporary bridge over the Ganvi khad stream, blocking the link roads to the twin panchayats of Kyao and Kut and causing significant hardship to the local population.
Heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of the Samej khad stream area on Tuesday evening had triggered a flash flood in the stream.
The strong currents submerged the road at several points, disrupting traffic in multiple locations and causing major difficulties for commuters. One or two culverts/bridges built over the khad (drain) were washed away in the flash flood.
Videos of stranded commuters on both sides of the stream and locals making efforts to restore the path by removing the stones have gone viral.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, has predicted rainfall to continue across Himachal Pradesh till July 14, with heavy showers also likely at several places during this period.
The weather office has sounded a yellow alert of heavy rainfall on July 9 in Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla and Sirmaur districts, followed by a similar alert in Kullu, Mandi, Shimla and Sirmaur districts on July 10.
The highest rainfall of 8 cm was recorded in Sandhole, followed by Jatton Barrage (7 cm), Mandi (6 cm), Baldwara (5 cm), Dharmshala (5 cm), Neri Aws (4 cm), Palampur (3 cm), Chuari (3 cm), Sundarnagar (3 cm), Bilaspur Sadar (2 cm), Sujanpur Tira (2 cm), Sarahan (2 cm), Paonta Sahib (1 cm), Jogindarnagar (1 cm), Jot (1 cm), Rampur Bushar (1 cm) and Keylong (1 cm).
The Chamba-Bharmour highway, which was blocked on Wednesday morning after a landslide near Durghati Ghar, has been restored for traffic, said officials .
Meanwhile, traffic on section of Mandi-Pathankot highway near Magal in Mandi district was disrupted after a landslide on Wednesday. Officials said vehicular movement was diverted through alternative routes, and traffic on affected stretch was restored at around 6 pm....
