ROHTAK, Sept. 12 -- Farmers in Rewari have given the government until September 20 to begin official procurement of bajra at the minimum support price, warning they will lock the grain mandi gate and start a protest from September 21 if the demand is not met. After a protest, farmer leaders associated with the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Charuni) submitted a memorandum on Friday to city magistrate (CTM) Jitendra Kumar. The delegation was led by district SC cell president Rajkumar. District president Samay Singh said bajra has already started arriving at the Rewari grain market, but private traders are buying it at Rs.2,000-Rs.2,100 per quintal against the MSP of Rs.2,900. Farmers are losing about Rs.800-Rs.900 on every quintal, he said. Samay Singh said the government claims it procures all crops at MSP, yet bajra growers are not getting a fair price.
