Chandigarh, July 30 -- Several roads in the city were left waterlogged as 42 mm rain was recorded in a span of an hour, starting around 7.30 pm on Wednesday. Internal roads from Sectors 38 to 34 remained submerged, slowing traffic significantly. A man reportedly slipped into a water-filled pothole near the Sector 35/34 traffic lights but escaped with minor injuries. Smaller junctions, including those connecting Sectors 32-33, 37-38 and 24-23, witnessed bumper-to-bumper traffic between 8 pm and 9.30 pm as stranded vehicles and waterlogged stretches disrupted movement across the city. Similar conditions are likely on Thursday and Friday as well with the India Meteorological Department issuing an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in isolated parts of the city . The maximum temperature jumped to 35.1degC on Wednesday from Tuesday's 29.6degC. The minimum saw a slight decrease of 0.9 degrees within 24 hours from 24.9degC to 24degC on Wednesday. The Punjab State and Chandigarh (UT) Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the death of a six-year-old boy who drowned in a rainwater-filled pond in Mohali's Barmajra village. Acting on media reports, the commission sought reports from the Mohali municipal corporation and deputy commissioner before the next hearing.
