DY Chandrachud to mediate Kapur family row

he Supreme Court on Thursday referred the high-profile dispute between late industrialist Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, and his wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, to mediation by former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
The case centres on Sunjay's estate and the Rani Kapur Family Trust, whose creation and control have been challenged by Rani. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan passed the order after both sides agreed to explore mediation.
"We firmly believe that all parties should participate in the mediation proceeding with an open mind. Otherwise, this is going to be a long-drawn litigation," the court said, according to Bar and Bench. It also asked the family not to make public statements, observing, "It's a family dispute; let it be confined among the family."
The court has sought a report or interim report from the mediator and will hear the matter next in the first week of August.
The family has been locked in a dispute since Sunjay's death on June 12, 2025. Rani had earlier alleged that while the family was grieving, Priya, Sunjay's third wife, sought to take control of the family legacy. She also claimed she was made to sign documents without being told their contents and was denied access to key accounts and company records.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had restrained Priya from transferring or altering equity shareholdings in three Indian companies, withdrawing provident fund amounts, moving money from certain accounts, transferring cryptocurrencies held by Sunjay, or alienating personal assets, including artworks.
