Deputy CM tears into BJP over FIR against MLAs 5 years ago
Shimla, March 20 -- Deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri on Thursday asked ex-CM Jai Ram Thakur to clarify his stand on the issues concerning state's interest. The ruling Congress government and the BJP lock horns over the FIR registration against Congress MLAs during predecessor Jai Ram Thakur's government in February 2021 following their protest during assembly session in which the BJP had accused them of manhandling the then governor, Bandaru Dattatreya. Agnihotri asserted that no FIR or legal action could be initiated against legislators for statements made within the assembly campus. He urged the speaker to issue a 'speaking order' to reaffirm the position.
Speaking in the House during the Motion of Thanks on governor's address, which former governor Shiv Pratap Shukla skipped to read on February 16 on the commencement of budget session, Agnihotri said, "We expect the speaker to provide high-level protection and issue a speaking order. No case against an MLA or FIR can be registered within the assembly premises."
Referring to past instances during the previous BJP government, he said, "During the BJP's tenure, FIRs were registered against Congress MLAs. In Lok Sabha or any Vidhan Sabha, no case can be registered against MLAs for what they say inside the House."
Responding to remarks by Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur regarding the governor's address, the deputy chief minister said the duration of the speech was immaterial.
"Whether the governor spoke for two minutes or read the full speech does not matter. The document has been laid on the table of the House. That means whatever is written in it stands valid. The governor acts on the recommendation of the Cabinet," he said....
