Cooker blast in Sector 20 school kitchen, staffer hurt
Chandigarh, July 18 -- A pressure cooker burst in the mid-day meal kitchen of Government Model High School, Sector 20-D, on Friday, injuring a kitchen staffer as rajma (kidney beans) was being cooked for the students' meal.
The blast caused a brief scare on the premises, though school authorities said a bigger mishap was averted and no children were harmed.
The injured woman was immediately rushed to hospital for treatment, they added.
The incident renewed previously echoed concerns over safety conditions for mid-day meal workers.
Anu Kumar, president of the Class-IV Employees Union, said such kitchen accidents were becoming a recurring pattern, occurring every few months, and demanded that the UT administration make health and accident insurance mandatory for all mid-day meal staff.
He said the union had repeatedly written to the administration on the issue but no concrete steps had been taken....
